36 VOLT BATTERY CHARGERS

We offer professional quality 36 volt battery chargers from 4 to 100 amps output for lead acid and sealed lead acid (AGM and Gel) batteries. All of our chargers are constant current, microprocessor controlled units, some having a final stage float mode, and some shutting off the charge output in the final stage while monitoring the battery voltage.

The Schauer charger is a single 36 volt output charger, utilizing an efficient 3 stage charging profile which can supply the battery charger's maximum output, and monitor the voltage as it rises to the set point of the charger. This absorption set point is generally between 42.3 volts DC and 44.1 volts DC in a 36 volt charger. The charger then holds at the absorption voltage (constant current) until the battery is fully charged. At full charge (end of the second stage), the charger drops the output voltage to the "float" stage (3rd), which is safe for long term battery maintenance. Float voltage is generally between 39.6 and 41.1 volts DC.

The float stage in a microprocessor controlled battery charger is an example of new technology solving an old problem. Prior to microprocessors, "trickle" chargers usually maintained an amperage level that was too high for long term battery care, and overcharged batteries, thus requiring constant observation. The smart chargers can be left connected for long periods, and the microprocessor supplies only enough current at the float voltage setting to compensate for internal battery discharge, and maintain the float voltage.

This internal discharge (self-discharge) is a characteristic of all lead acid batteries, but the rate varies by battery type. The wet, or flooded lead acid types are constructed of a lead-antimony alloy because of the structural strength of the alloy. This lead-antimony alloy leads to internal discharge rates between 8% and 40% in a flooded lead acid battery. The AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) and Gel sealed lead acid battery types, use a lead-calcium alloy, which does not have the same mechanical strength as the lead-antimony, since the construction materials (mats between plates in the AGM, gelled electrolyte in a gel) stabilize the battery structure. The lead-calcium batteries have a discharge rate which is between 2% and 10% a month, considerably lower than the wet types. This internal discharge causes suphation on battery plates, which will harden if it remains on the plates, either reducing battery capacity, or destroying its ability to be recharged. A relatively high percentage of premature battery failures are due to sulphation. Use of multi-stage chargers and the float mode reduces or eliminates the sulphation problem.

The Dual Pro marine battery chargers are multi bank, independent 12 volt output, 6, 10, and 15 amp per bank, temperature compensating chargers. They are heavy duty, waterproof, and fully potted for vibration resistance. The larger models can be built as portable chargers, with alligator clips. The independent output battery chargers have a separate positive and negative connector for each bank, and a separate microprocessor for each bank which controls the charging algorithm. They can be used on batteries of differing state of charge, age, size, or type (sealed, flooded). This works well for series strings of 12 volt batteries for 36 volts. After each battery has its own positive and negative connection, the microprocessor for each bank does not care if they are in series or parallel. This is useful in 36 volt charger applications where one of the 12 volt batteries in the string is supplying some 12 volt loads (like communications, radar, etc.), and the batteries end up with an imbalance. A straight output 36 volt charger used in this situation would not properly charge the batteries and fix the imbalance. They are also useful in a boat with a trolling system (maybe 24 volts), and a starting battery. The Dual Pros are well built chargers, which can be mounted onboard for years of dependable service. They are built in the USA, which is uncommon for electronic items.

Newer to the Dual Pro battery charger line, are the Eagle series, heavy duty single output industrial battery chargers. In the 36 volt line, Dual Pro makes a 12 amp and a 25 amp version. These have a carry handle, and usually come with an Anderson type 2-pole connector, but can be built with alligator clips, ring terminals, or various golf cart connectors. These are heavy duty, microprocessor controlled transformer type chargers, built for commercial duty. The Eagle 36 volt charger is applicable for industrial carts, scissor lifts, small or infrequently used fork lifts, golf carts, or other heavy use applications using a 36 volt system.

The Dual Pro units are also available with a true gel profile microchip.

The Quick Charge 36 volt offerings include portable type chargers with handles, available with alligator clips or various industrial connectors, and on board units for mounting on industrial equipment or electric vehicles. There are also 60 amp and 100 amp industrial units. These are also built in the US and have a 3 year warranty.

Battery systems using 36 volts are found in industrial systems, golf carts, RV and marine, riding scooters, and others. They usually involve a three 12 volt batteries hooked in series, or six 6 volt batteries in series. Battery packs in multiple battery applications are recommendended to be of the same age and capacity. Batteries of different age or depth of discharge cycles have differing internal resistance, and a charger sees the average resistance of the pack, which may see some batteries being overcharged. The same principle applies to series/parallel connection of dissimilar sized batteries.
